A couple weeks ago Instagram announced that video was going to be introduced to their platform. With more than 130 million users, it comes as no surprise that over five million videos were uploaded in the first 24 hours alone.
Currently, 67% of the top brands in the world are on Instagram (i.e. Nike, MTV, Starbucks, Gucci, Burberry), and with Facebook’s 1 billion users in full force (Facebook owns Instagram), the opportunity for brands to share intriguing, authentic content is easier than ever.
Using Instagram video, brands can easily:
- Provide a video teaser promoting a new product launch
- Capture and feature multiple items within a product line (users can record multiple clips in succession)
- Live capture a brand-sponsored event
- Host a rapid Q&A with a brand ambassador
- Offer a behind-the-scenes look at their brand
Host video upload contests with fans and followers organized by associated hashtag
In addition to these ideas, I’ve gathered several web articles with additional considerations when using Instagram video – with a focus on technical functions and trends.
- It’s not as easy as it looks. Venture Beat reminds us that creating video is actually hard. While the barrier to entry for creating cost-effective videos has greatly reduced the video must be interesting, compelling, and have a great call-to-action. These tried and true principles are essential for the success of any video campaign.
- Forbes said that we should get ready for TV-like ads on Facebook.
- 3…2…1…action! Fast Company suggests that Instagram’s video stabilization will make you feel like Martin Scorsese.
- Burberry has been leading the charge (they’ve already produced behind-the-scenes videos on Instagram) with all things fashion and social. Multiple Burberry case studies reiterate why having a consistent brand message is vital for social and e-commerce success.
- So what’s going to happen to Vine? We’re not sure yet, but sharing of Vine on Twitter has dipped after Instagram video’s debut.
